Alem's journey of resilience and community support
Meet Alem, a dedicated community volunteer who has been making a difference for over a year.
Alem’s story is one of resilience and the power of community support. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Alem faced significant challenges. She lost her job, became homeless, and spent two years sleeping rough in front of the Preston Police Station. Despite these hardships, Alem’s spirit remained unbroken.
Alem’s desire to give back to Australia, the country that has been so supportive to her, brought her to volunteering. She strongly believes that volunteering is one of the most important things a person can do to improve the world around them.
Alem chose to volunteer with VincentCare because of our commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice. In 2023, she began volunteering at Ozanam House as a catering assistant. Her role not only allowed her to contribute to the community but also helped her regain employment. Today, Alem is also pursuing her Child Care training.
Alem’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of community. We are incredibly grateful for her dedication and the positive impact she continues to make.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Alem and all our volunteers for their incredible contributions. Interested in volunteering? Click here to start your volunteer journey today.
