The Private Rental Assistance Program (PRAP) is a program that assists households in the Hume and Moreland areas to access new or to maintain existing private rental properties.

PRAP is a preventative intervention that provides holistic support to households experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The program is delivered in a flexible manner, to provide support and practical assistance that is tailored to the needs of each household. 

The PRAP program is funded to provide support and practical assistance to households in a flexible manner that is tailored to the needs of each household.  

PRAP includes three elements:

  • Private rental brokers
  • Private rental assistance brokerage
  • PRAP Plus – support program

The program aims to:

  • Provide time limited outreach intervention to support tenancies and households
  • Support homeless clients to locate private rental
  • Address issues that contribute to tenancy breakdown
  • Support households to stay in the private rental market
  • Support client stated goals to reduce risk factors which could result in homelessness
  • Prevent and reduce homelessness

What is the eligibility criteria for PRAP?

The Private Rental Assistance Program is targeted to households who will be able to sustain private rental housing with limited support and who are:

  • Are at risk of losing their current tenancy – for example, due to a personal crisis, short term financial difficulties, rent arrears, tenancy dispute etc.
  • Could sustain affordable and appropriate housing in the private rental market but need assistance with the transition from crisis, transitional or Program social housing settings.
  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Residing in the Hume/Moreland Area
  • Receiving a stable income (including wages, Centrelink income support, or self-employed)
  • Committed to residing in private rental as a long-term housing option
  • Prepared adhere to the Residential Tenancies Act (1997)

How to make a referral to PRAP?

Households that require assistance to establish a private rental tenancy or maintain their current private rental property can contact the VincentCare PRAP Team on 9304 0104
Services wishing to make a referral to the PRAP program can contact the PRAP worker on 9304 0104 and ask for an application form.
